What sets the method apart is its insistence on putting the user first and grounding everything in observation before drawing conclusions. The problem takes priority over the solution.

The Process: Iterative, not Linear

Design Thinking follows no rigid sequence. The phases Understand, Observe, Synthesise, Ideate, Prototype and Test are interlocking and repeated as often as needed until the solution holds.

Innovation is not coincidence and design is not art.

Our first goal is to find a relevant question within a given framework, to define a problem clearly before addressing it. It helps to have a clear sense of direction, but as Bruce Lee put it:

A goal is not always meant to be reached; it often serves simply as something to aim at.

We gather information along the way and build a deep understanding of the problem space by focusing on people's experiences and needs. Interviews, field observations, personas, point-of-view statements and cultural probes are just some of the research approaches we use to generate insight. The experimental, exploratory access to user-oriented qualitative data is central to these methods and helps build a sharper picture of the target audience.

From there, we develop and consolidate ideas, shaping a solution through an iterative process.

To assess whether our output works, we measure and evaluate the effectiveness of a solution and refine the design based on real responses. Once we are confident we have found the core of the matter, we assemble a team capable of taking any strong idea from concept to completion.

At VUCX, insights from the research phase feed directly into adjacent services, such as Strategic Brand Consulting or UX / UI Design, with no break between method and execution.

Design Thinking Workshop

VUCX runs Design Thinking workshops in person at our Cologne studio or on-site with clients, as well as in fully remote formats for distributed teams.

Design Thinking in Practice

The "Deutsche Stiftung für Engagement und Ehrenamt", Germany's federal foundation for volunteering and civic engagement, commissioned VUCX to guide a full Design Thinking process.

From defining the research question and conducting qualitative interviews with target group participants, through affinity mapping and persona development, to an on-site ideation workshop in Neustrelitz, the process concluded with tested prototypes and a final report with concrete recommendations.

How does Design Thinking differ from conventional project management?
Design Thinking puts the user at the start, not the solution. Rather than beginning with an assumption and working backwards, it starts with observation, research and understanding; only then does development begin. This reduces the risk of building the wrong thing well.

Which organisations benefit from Design Thinking?
Any organisation with a clearly defined problem, or one that has not yet identified what the real problem is. The method works across sectors: manufacturing companies, public authorities, start-ups and corporations alike. What matters is not size, but the willingness to question existing assumptions.
